Abandoned brew kettle and industrial machinery in the brew house of Schmidt Brewery in St. Paul, Minnesota. — The Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company operated on West Seventh Street in St. Paul from 1900 until production ceased in 2002, when the Minnesota Brewing Company, its final owner, shut the plant down. Schmidt's beer had been a regional staple for much of the 20th century, at one point ranking among the largest breweries in the country by output. The brew house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, held the kettles and tanks used to mash and boil grain into wort before fermentation. After sitting vacant for over a decade, the complex was redeveloped into the Schmidt Artist Lofts, reopening in 2013 with the old brewing equipment left in place as a reminder of the site's industrial past.

Rusted boiler and steam machinery in the abandoned Schmidt Brewery boiler room in St. Paul, Minnesota. — The Schmidt Brewery complex on West Seventh Street traces its roots to 1855, when Jacob Schmidt began brewing on the site after taking over an earlier operation founded by German immigrant Christopher Stahlmann. By the early 1900s it had grown into one of the largest breweries in the country, producing Schmidt Beer and City Club under a sprawling campus of production and power buildings along the Mississippi River bluff. Brewing operations continued under various owners until the plant closed in 1990, ending more than a century of continuous production. The boiler and mechanical rooms housed the steam systems that powered brewing kettles, bottling lines, and refrigeration throughout the complex. In 2013 the site was redeveloped into the Schmidt Artist Lofts, and the brewery's main buildings were later listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Dunnell and constructed in stages between 1888 and 1902. It follows the Kirkbride Plan, a 19th-century model for asylum design developed by psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride, which arranged wards in a stepped, wing-like layout to give patients access to light and air. The building's sandstone and brick construction runs roughly a quarter mile end to end, making it one of the largest structures built under this design in the country. The hospital operated under state ownership until it closed in the 1990s, and the site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Curved cream-brick wing of Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center, a Kirkbride-plan hospital built in 1890. — The Kirkbride Building at the former Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center was built in 1890 to a design by architect Warren B. Dunnell, following the linear, staggered-wing plan developed by psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride for state asylums. The curved wing on this facade is a rare architectural feature among Kirkbride-plan hospitals, most of which used straight, angled wings to maximize light and ventilation in patient wards. Built of cream-colored brick with a rusticated stone base, the complex once housed thousands of patients before the state shifted to community-based mental health care in the late 20th century. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has sat largely vacant since the hospital's closure.

Dunnell, following the linear, staggered-wing plan advocated by Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride for the humane treatment of the mentally ill. The complex once housed the Fergus Falls State Hospital, which admitted its first patients in 1890 and operated for over a century before closing in the early 2000s. Built of cream-colored brick with a slate roof, the building stretches nearly a third of a mile end to end, making it one of the longest buildings in Minnesota. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Fergus Falls Kirkbride Building's yellow brick wing and rotunda with Richardsonian Romanesque architecture, Minnesota. — The Fergus Falls Kirkbride Building was designed by architect Warren B. Dunnell and completed in stages beginning in 1890 as the Fergus Falls State Hospital, a facility built on the Kirkbride Plan for the treatment of mental illness. That plan, developed by physician Thomas Story Kirkbride, called for staggered wings extending from a central administration section so that each ward received natural light and ventilation. The building's yellow brick and sandstone trim are typical of the Richardsonian Romanesque style popular for large institutional buildings in the late 19th century. The hospital operated under changing names into the 1990s before closing, and the property has since been the subject of preservation and redevelopment efforts. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Dunnell and completed in 1890 as the Fergus Falls State Hospital. Its patterned brickwork and corner tower reflect the High Victorian Gothic style Dunnell favored for the state's asylum architecture. The building follows the Kirkbride Plan, a 19th-century model developed by psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride that arranged wards in staggered wings to give patients access to light and air. Fergus Falls' facility operated as a mental health hospital for most of the 20th century before closing in the 1990s. The structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Central tower of the Fergus Falls Kirkbride Building, a Romanesque Revival hospital completed in 1890 in Minnesota. — The Kirkbride Building at the former Fergus Falls State Hospital was designed by Warren B. Dunnell and completed in phases beginning in 1890. Its central tower, capped with a flared red roof, rises above the administrative core that once linked wards built according to the Kirkbride Plan, a 19th-century model for mental health treatment favoring light, air, and separation of patients by ward. The Romanesque Revival design uses locally quarried granite and sandstone trim, materials chosen for durability across the hospital's more than a century of operation before its closure in 2005. The complex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and redevelopment efforts have converted portions of the site to housing while preserving the tower and main facade as a landmark on the Fergus Falls skyline.

Edbrooke and completed in stages between 1890 and 1902 as the main structure of the Fergus Falls State Hospital. It follows the Kirkbride Plan, a 19th-century model for asylum design developed by psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride, which arranged patient wards in stepped, receding wings to maximize sunlight and ventilation. The building's central tower once housed administrative offices and marked the institution's formal entrance. Built of cream-colored brick with sandstone trim, the complex operated as a state psychiatric hospital until 2005. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Abandoned patient room in the Fergus Falls Kirkbride Building with deteriorating plaster walls and cast-iron radiator. — The Fergus Falls Kirkbride Building was completed in 1890 as the main structure of the Fergus Falls State Hospital, designed under the Kirkbride Plan that shaped American asylum architecture in the 19th century. Warren B. Dunnell served as architect for the complex, which operated as a state psychiatric hospital until the late 20th century before falling into disuse. Cast-iron steam radiators like the one found in these patient rooms were standard heating fixtures throughout Kirkbride-era institutions, tied into centralized boiler systems built to serve hundreds of rooms at once. The building has sat largely vacant since the hospital's closure, and decades without climate control have left plaster and paint failing throughout its interior corridors and rooms.

Vacant institutional ward interior with large windows, support columns, and deteriorating walls at Fergus Falls Kirkbride — The Fergus Falls Kirkbride Building housed patient wards like this one, part of the former Fergus Falls State Hospital, which opened in 1890 under the Kirkbride Plan of moral treatment for the mentally ill. That model called for long, light-filled wings arranged to give each ward access to sunlight and cross-ventilation, a design principle reflected in the wall of windows along this room's exterior side. The hospital operated for over a century before closing in the early 2000s, and the building has sat vacant since, with preservation groups and Otter Tail County debating its future use. The structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Kirkbride, built in 1890 to the linear-wing plan popularized by psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride, relied on a central power plant to heat and light its sprawling complex, and tunnels such as this carried pipes and conduit the length of the building. The facility operated as a state hospital into the late 20th century before closing, leaving its mechanical infrastructure largely intact and exposed to decades of decay.

Abandoned workshop interior in Fergus Falls Kirkbride building with orange support columns and work benches. — The Fergus Falls Kirkbride building, part of the former Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center, opened in 1890 and operated as a state hospital for the mentally ill under the Kirkbride Plan, a 19th-century model that emphasized therapeutic design and self-sufficient campus operations. That self-sufficiency required extensive support facilities, including maintenance and carpentry shops where staff built and repaired equipment used throughout the institution. The hospital campus, designed by architect Warren B. Dunnell, once housed over 1,500 patients at its peak and functioned as a nearly self-contained small city, with its own power plant, farm, and workshops. The facility closed in the 1990s, and portions of the Kirkbride building have sat vacant since, with maintenance areas like this one left largely untouched.

Underground steam tunnel at Fergus Falls Kirkbride Building with deteriorating white walls and exposed industrial piping. — The Fergus Falls Kirkbride Building relied on a network of underground steam tunnels to connect its wards, kitchen, and power plant, allowing staff and supplies to move between buildings without crossing the exposed grounds. Built following the Kirkbride Plan pioneered by psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride, the complex opened in 1890 as the Fergus Falls State Hospital. The tunnels carried steam, water, and electrical lines from the central power plant to heat and service the sprawling institution, which at its peak housed more than 2,000 patients. The hospital closed in the early 2000s, and much of its infrastructure, including these service corridors, has sat unused since.

Abandoned wooden grain elevator stands in overgrown grassland near Charbonneau, North Dakota. — Wood-crib grain elevators like this one were built by farm cooperatives and independent grain companies across North Dakota from the early 1900s through the mid-20th century. Grain cribbing construction stacked dimensional lumber horizontally, plank by plank, to form the walls, a method chosen for its strength in holding the outward pressure of stored grain. Elevators of this type typically stood two to three stories tall with a peaked cupola or headhouse above for the conveying machinery, though many, including this one, have lost those upper features over time. Small-town elevators like this served as the local collection point where farmers hauled wheat and other grain to be weighed, stored, and loaded onto rail cars. Rail line closures and the consolidation of grain handling into larger regional facilities left many of these small-town elevators obsolete by the late 20th century.

Abandoned brick schoolhouse with red shutters stands isolated in grassland near Crystal Springs, North Dakota. — The old Crystal Springs School sits on a rise of grassland in Kidder County, North Dakota, its brick facade and parapet detailing typical of early 1900s rural school construction on the Great Plains. Schools like this one served small farming communities before state-driven consolidation efforts, which accelerated after the 1947 passage of North Dakota's school reorganization laws, closed hundreds of one- and two-room schoolhouses across the state. Crystal Springs itself was platted along the Northern Pacific Railway line and never grew beyond a small unincorporated community, leaving buildings like this school without a local population to sustain them once district boundaries were redrawn.
