ArcelorMittal's Indiana Harbor works in East Chicago, Indiana, is the largest integrated steel mill in North America, spanning several miles along Lake Michigan. The site traces its origins to Inland Steel, which opened the plant in 1902 before it became part of ArcelorMittal following the company's 2006 merger. Mill bays like this one house the heavy structural framing and overhead crane systems used to move steel billets and bar products through the production process. Numbered concrete-clad columns and marked fire extinguisher stations are standard safety features required throughout the plant's vast industrial floor space.
