ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor traces its roots to Inland Steel, which began operations at this East Chicago, Indiana site in 1901. The plant sits along Lake Michigan and today ranks among the largest integrated steel mills in North America, with the Long Carbon division rolling bar and rod products from steel made on-site. The overhead crane rails and support columns that run the length of buildings like this one were engineered to move raw materials and finished product between processing stages. Inland Steel merged into Ispat International in 1998, and subsequent corporate consolidations brought the Indiana Harbor works under the ArcelorMittal name in 2006.
