ArcelorMittal's East Chicago works sits on the site of the former Inland Steel Company, founded in 1893 along the Indiana Harbor Ship Canal. The Indiana Harbor plant remains one of the largest integrated steelmaking complexes in North America, producing flat-rolled steel for the automotive and appliance industries. Overhead cranes like the one controlled from this booth move molten metal, coils, and heavy equipment throughout the mill's production bays. A discarded Chicago Sun-Times section referencing Rahm Emanuel's 2015 mayoral runoff places this control station's abandonment sometime after that election.
