The Fergus Falls Kirkbride Building, part of the former Fergus Falls State Hospital, was designed by architect Warren B. Dunnell and completed in 1890 as one of Minnesota's earliest state institutions for the treatment of mental illness. Its layout followed the Kirkbride Plan, a 19th-century design philosophy that emphasized natural light, ventilation, and staggered wings to house patients in a more therapeutic environment. Hexagonal mosaic tile flooring and wall-mounted porcelain sinks like this one were standard fixtures throughout the hospital's corridors and support rooms, chosen for their durability and ease of cleaning. The hospital operated for over a century before closing in the early 2000s, and the Kirkbride building has remained vacant since, subject to ongoing preservation and redevelopment discussions.
