The Fergus Falls Kirkbride Building, part of the former Fergus Falls State Hospital, was completed in 1890 to a design by architect Warren B. Dunnell, following the linear-plan model developed by psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride for treating mental illness. The hospital operated under state control for over a century before closing in the 2000s, leaving the brick-and-plaster structure exposed to decades of freeze-thaw cycles and water infiltration. Steam and utility pipes, like the one running along this corridor wall, once carried heat throughout the building's many wings. The structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and preservation groups have pushed for its adaptive reuse even as sections continue to deteriorate.
