The Fergus Falls Kirkbride Building operated as the Fergus Falls State Hospital, opening in 1890 under the Kirkbride Plan, a 19th-century model of asylum design meant to promote patient recovery through structured layout and natural light. The plan called for a central administrative core flanked by stepped, staggered wings, with corridors like this one connecting wards, offices, and support spaces across the sprawling complex. An information desk near the entrance area would have directed visitors and staff through the building's maze of interconnected wings. The hospital continued operating in some capacity into the 1990s before closing, and portions of the site were later secured with accordion-style security gates to limit access to the deteriorating structure.
