Blaw-Knox Company, founded in Pittsburgh in 1917 through the merger of Blaw Steel and Knox Pressed and Welded Steel, built heavy equipment for the steel and construction industries, including rolling mill machinery like the stand pictured here. ArcelorMittal's East Chicago, Indiana works traces its roots to Inland Steel, which built its first furnace on the site in 1902 along Lake Michigan. The plant became part of ArcelorMittal in 2006 following the merger of Arcelor and Mittal Steel. Rolling mills like this one shape heated steel slabs into flat or structural forms by passing them between powered rolls under extreme pressure.
