Minneapolis Uprising – June 2021

June 1–30, 2021 Minneapolis

June 2021 in Minneapolis focused on sentencing proceedings for Derek Chauvin and ongoing protest activity. Protesters gathered ahead of and following sentencing hearings, emphasizing that accountability required broader institutional change. In early June, the Agape Movement worked with city officials to open George Floyd Square to vehicular traffic. Hours later 3 miles away, Winston Smith was killed by a U.S. Marshals Task Force on top of an Uptown Minneapolis parking ramp. The killing led to ongoing protests lasting weeks.
