The protest was held in response to the killing of Winston Smith by a federal task force on June 3, 2021, and the subsequent death of Deona Marie on June 13, 2021. Marie was killed when Nicholas Kraus drove his vehicle into a crowd of demonstrators protesting Smith's death.
