Smith, who was Black, was shot and killed by law enforcement on June 3rd, 2021, sparking demonstrations in the Uptown Minneapolis area. The protests, which occurred in the vicinity of the SōtaRōl building, highlighted ongoing tensions between the community and law enforcement.
