December 1–31, 2020 Minneapolis

December 2020 in Minneapolis unfolded during a period of political transition, continued protest activity, and winter conditions that reshaped how public gatherings occurred across the city. Protesters remained active through marches, rallies, and memorial events focused on police accountability and the approaching criminal trial of former officer Derek Chauvin. While colder weather and pandemic restrictions reduced the scale of some gatherings, organized protest continued in visible and deliberate ways.

George Floyd Square at 38th Street and Chicago Avenue remained an active protest and memorial site throughout the month. Volunteers and protesters maintained the intersection despite snow and freezing temperatures, reinforcing its role as a space for remembrance, strategy discussions, and ongoing demands for structural reform. Seasonal decorations, candles, and new artwork layered over earlier memorial elements, reflecting both endurance and adaptation.

Across Minneapolis, boarded storefronts, rebuilding efforts, and visible security planning signaled preparation for potential unrest tied to upcoming court proceedings. Protesters organized targeted actions, press events, and neighborhood gatherings aimed at sustaining public attention on accountability and systemic change. December reflects a period of persistence — with protest continuing into winter as Minneapolis moved toward the next phase of legal and political reckoning.
