Clint Conner Mayoral Campaign Sign, Minneapolis

Clint Conner Mayoral Campaign Sign, Minneapolis

October 2021 — A lawn sign supporting Clint Conner’s mayoral campaign stands along a residential boulevard in Minneapolis. Conner, an attorney and political newcomer, ran on a platform focused on public safety reforms, neighborhood-level engagement, and governance changes within the city’s mayor–council structure. Yard signs like this became common across parts of Minneapolis during the campaign cycle, reflecting heightened civic interest following several years of intense debate over public safety, police restructuring, and the future of city governance. Municipal elections in Minneapolis often draw regional attention due to the city’s distinctive political climate, strong neighborhood identities, and history of competitive mayoral contests. Candidate signage has long been a visible part of the city’s election seasons—especially in the years after 2020, when local races increasingly intersected with national conversations about public policy and urban leadership.

Alicia Gibson Campaign Sign in Minneapolis Ward 10

Alicia Gibson Campaign Sign in Minneapolis Ward 10

October 2021 — A campaign sign for Alicia Gibson stands outside a neighborhood storefront in Minneapolis’ Ward 10, a district centered on Uptown, Whittier, and parts of South Minneapolis. Ward 10 has long been one of the city’s most politically active areas, shaped by rental-heavy housing stock, transit-focused neighborhoods, and dense commercial corridors around Hennepin, Lyndale, and Lake Street. Campaign signs became common across the ward during the municipal election cycle as candidates addressed issues central to this part of the city: small-business recovery, housing policy, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, and the future of Uptown’s commercial identity. Historically, Ward 10 has been a bellwether for broader citywide political shifts. Its mix of long-term residents, young renters, and small-business owners has kept competition high and civic turnout strong. In recent years, community debates over zoning updates, transportation improvements, and neighborhood redevelopment have made Ward 10 races especially watched, with campaigns frequently engaging directly with street-level concerns and neighborhood-driven organizing.

October 2021 — Habanero Tacos Grill glows along East Lake Street late into the evening, with its bright “TACOS TACOS TACOS” window lettering and a branded food truck parked out front. The restaurant reflects the long-standing presence of Latino food culture on the corridor, where small family-run kitchens, taquerías, and mobile food vendors have shaped the visual and culinary identity of the neighborhood. Located along a stretch of Lake Street known for immigrant-owned businesses and tightly packed storefronts, the shop sits within a commercial landscape rebuilt and revitalized multiple times over the past century. Despite economic shifts and recent reconstruction efforts, the area remains a hub of diverse restaurants and community-oriented businesses, with places like Habanero Tacos Grill continuing to anchor the corridor’s daily life.

Yusra Arab Campaign Sign in Minneapolis’ Ward 2

October 2021 — A campaign sign for Yusra Arab stands among late-season plants in Minneapolis’ Ward 2, one of the city’s most politically active and demographically diverse districts. Ward 2 includes neighborhoods such as Cedar-Riverside, Prospect Park, Seward, and the University district—areas shaped by long histories of immigration, student populations, and tenant-driven community organizing. Yard signs like this became common during the municipal election cycle as candidates focused on issues that have defined Ward 2 politics for decades: rental housing policy, transportation infrastructure, campus-area safety, and the evolving relationship between the University of Minnesota and surrounding neighborhoods. Minneapolis’ ward system has historically produced competitive races, especially in districts with high levels of civic engagement and shifting demographics. Ward 2 is known for its strong DFL presence, multi-lingual community outreach, and a mix of long-term residents and new arrivals. Campaign messaging in the ward often reflects its unique blend of grassroots activism, student-led political energy, and deep neighborhood-level involvement in city governance.

Greenwood Fire Burn Scar Road, Superior National Forest Sunset

Greenwood Fire Burn Scar Road, Superior National Forest Sunset

September 2021 — A Forest Service road winds through the burn scar of the 2021 Greenwood Fire in northeastern Minnesota, where charred trunks and open sightlines reveal the scale of the blaze that ultimately consumed more than 27,000 acres of Superior National Forest. The fire began in August 2021 after a lightning strike ignited drought-stressed timber, rapidly expanding under unusually dry and windy conditions. At its peak, roughly 500 firefighters, support staff, and aerial crews worked to protect cabins, roads, and the nearby communities spread across Lake County. This photograph was made inside the restricted closure zone during the period when the U.S. Forest Service still had nearly 100 personnel assigned to monitoring, repair work, and suppression repair. The skeletal tree canopy and exposed soil illustrate the early stages of ecological recovery—an ongoing process that will shape this section of the Northwoods for decades.

September 2021 — A stretch of forest road in Superior National Forest glows with intense backlight as the sun drops behind the pines, illuminating early-autumn leaves and sending a warm haze across the pavement. This part of the forest lies within the vast Northwoods region of northeastern Minnesota, where mixed stands of birch, aspen, and conifers line quiet two-lane roads leading toward trailheads, lakes, and remote campgrounds. The soft golden light, drifting insects, and dense treeline capture the transition from late summer to fall in one of Minnesota’s most expansive public landscapes—an area managed for recreation, wildlife habitat, and long-term conservation.

These destinations sit along a network of remote gravel roads east of Ely and north of Isabella, an area known for its mixed pine–birch forest, quiet canoe routes, and access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The cracked reflective surface of the sign hints at decades of harsh winters and summer sun, while the surrounding understory—changing with early autumn color—reflects the rugged, lightly traveled character of this part of the Northwoods.

Signs like this—often weathered, lichen-covered, and mounted on repurposed road barricades—reflect the long history of recreational and utility snowmobiling in northern Minnesota, where deep snow and long winters have shaped a network of informal and designated trails since the mid-20th century.

Its signage—bold white lettering over a backlit panel—has become a recognizable part of the neighborhood’s streetscape and nightlife. The theater emerged during a period of renewed investment in the Lyn-Lake district, when independent venues, restaurants, and arts organizations were helping to define the neighborhood as a creative corridor between Uptown and Whittier. Over the decades, the Jungle has developed a reputation for staging artist-driven performances and supporting local talent, contributing to the broader evolution of Minneapolis’s community-based theater movement that gained momentum in the late 20th centur

Political Yard Signs in a Residential Neighborhood, 2024 Election Season

September 2021 — A row of political signs displayed along a residential fence during the 2024 U.S. election cycle. The banners, supporting former President Donald Trump and expressing opposition to President Joe Biden, reflect the increasing visibility of partisan messaging in everyday public and suburban spaces. Throughout the Upper Midwest and many parts of the country, large-format yard signs and roadside banners became common ways for homeowners to express political allegiance ahead of the election. The use of oversized, commercially printed campaign signs grew significantly after the 2016 and 2020 elections, coinciding with the rise of direct-to-consumer political merchandise and online storefronts selling non-official campaign materials. Residential displays like this illustrate how political identity has increasingly blended into street-level visual culture, especially in communities where private property is used as a platform for ongoing political messaging outside traditional election windows.
