The Basilica of Saint Mary, dedicated in 1926, was the first church in the United States to be designated a basilica, an honor granted by Pope Pius XI in 1926. Designed by architect Emmanuel Masqueray in the Beaux-Arts style, it serves as co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis alongside the Cathedral of Saint Paul. The dome rises above Hennepin Avenue near downtown Minneapolis, topped by a lantern and cross that mark the roofline from throughout the surrounding neighborhood. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains an active parish church.
