The Minneapolis skyline rises behind the elevated overpasses of Interstate 35W, a major north-south freeway. This complex network of concrete structures, viewed from the Cedar Lake Trail, facilitates regional transportation and connects the city's central business district with surrounding areas. The construction of I-35W, completed in stages from the 1960s through the 1990s, significantly reshaped the urban environment and continues to serve as a vital artery for commerce and daily commutes in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
