The area has been a place of protest since the June 2021 killing of Winston Smith. Smith was killed by a federal task force serving a warrant. Protester Deona Marie was killed ten days later when a man drove his vehicle through barricades killing her.

November 2021 — The corner of Hennepin Avenue and Lake Street in Uptown Minneapolis. Deona Marie written on boards around the Seven Points Mall. Deona Marie, a protester, was killed on June 13th when a man drove his vehicle through barricades setup by those demonstrating over the law enforcement shooting death of Winston Smith ten days prior.
