Minneapolis Police at Lake Street after Winston Smith protest

Minneapolis Police officers stand near graffiti referencing Winston Smith and Deona Marie after protests in June 2021.
Minneapolis Police officers are seen near the intersection of Hennepin Avenue and Lake Street, an area that became a focal point for protests following the killings of Winston Smith and Deona Marie in June 2021. Protesters had been occupying the space after Smith's death, which occurred when Hennepin and Ramsey County officers, part of a Federal Task Force, fired their weapons while serving a warrant. Deona Marie was killed when Nicholas Kraus drove his vehicle into a crowd protesting Smith's killing. The plywood barrier in the background bears graffiti referencing these events, including "WINSTON SMITH WAS ASSASSINATED" and "DEATH TO US MARSHALLS."
