ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor Long Carbon

ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor Long Carbon was a steelmaking and bar-products facility in East Chicago, Indiana, located within the larger Indiana Harbor industrial complex. The roughly 90-acre plant produced steel from scrap using an electric arc furnace, continuous billet caster and bar mill. After being idled during the 2009 recession, the facility restarted in 2010 but continued to struggle with low utilization and high operating costs. ArcelorMittal permanently idled the steelmaking operation in March 2015, with the rolling mill following later that year. The Long Carbon plant was subsequently dismantled and demolished, removing a facility whose industrial roots stretched back more than a century.
