George Floyd Square Memorial Outside Cup Foods

George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020, on the sidewalk outside Cup Foods at the corner of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue. Within days, the intersection filled with flowers, signs, and artwork, and residents began calling it George Floyd Square. A wrought-iron gate and a wall of flowers now mark the spot where Floyd died, tended by volunteers who've kept the memorial going through changes of season for months at a time.
