Boarded storefronts line Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis in November 2020, with cyclists and pedestrians moving through the transit-and-pedestrian corridor. Businesses along the mall installed plywood over windows and entrances after the unrest that followed the murder of George Floyd in May 2020. Nicollet Mall, created in 1967 and later reconstructed as a redesigned streetscape for buses, foot traffic, and downtown retail, remained open to daily use while many ground-floor commercial spaces kept protective coverings in place.
