A basketball court in Marktown, East Chicago, Indiana, stands directly beside large industrial buildings in the Indiana Harbor area. Marktown was developed in the early 20th century by industrialist Clayton Mark as a planned company town for employees of his steel pipe works and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood sits amid one of northwest Indiana’s heaviest industrial corridors, near major steel and petroleum facilities, placing residential and recreational spaces in close proximity to active industry.
