Liberty Street in Marktown, East Chicago, Indiana, is lined with tightly spaced workers' houses in the planned company town developed by industrialist Clayton Mark for employees of his steel pipe works. Established in the early 20th century, Marktown was designed as a compact residential enclave near the Indiana Harbor industrial corridor, with U.S. Steel and the BP Whiting refinery in the surrounding area. The neighborhood is noted for its unusual layout, including raised sidewalks and narrow roadway dimensions that distinguish it from conventional street plans in Northwest Indiana.
