Marktown in East Chicago, Indiana, is shown at the intersection of Liberty and Spring streets, where houses stand immediately beside the BP refinery complex in the Indiana Harbor industrial corridor. Marktown was developed in the early 20th century as a planned company town for industrial workers, and it remains a residential neighborhood closely bordered by heavy industry. The refinery is one of the major petroleum-processing facilities in northwest Indiana, part of the broader concentration of steelmaking, refining, and petrochemical operations along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
