Distillation towers, pipework, and flare stacks at BP's largest global refinery in Whiting and East Chicago, Indiana, by night and dusk

BP Whiting RefineryWhiting, IN

The BP Whiting Refinery sits along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Whiting, Indiana, a sprawling complex of distillation towers, pipework, flare stacks, and processing units that makes it the largest oil refinery in the Midwest and BP's largest globally. Established in 1942, the facility processes crude oil into gasoline, diesel, and other petroleum products that supply regional transportation and industrial sectors across the United States.

The refinery stretches across multiple municipalities in Northwest Indiana, with related BP operations visible from Hammond to East Chicago, where the Indiana Harbor Refinery sits directly beside Marktown — a planned company town built in the early twentieth century whose residential streets at Liberty and Spring now stand immediately adjacent to the industrial complex. This set documents the refinery's scale and continuous round-the-clock operations, including maintenance activity, rail transport of materials, and the fog and steam that define its appearance in the industrial corridor. It draws on coverage from both the Whiting main complex and the East Chicago facility, offering a wider look at BP's footprint in a region long shaped by steelmaking, refining, and petrochemical production along the lakeshore.
