The Marktown Historic District sign stands in East Chicago, Indiana, marking a planned industrial community established in 1917 by manufacturer Clayton Mark for employees of the Mark Manufacturing Company. Marktown was designed as a company town near the Indiana Harbor industrial corridor and is noted for its early-20th-century planning and distinctive worker housing. The neighborhood was later recognized for its historic significance as one of northwest Indiana’s surviving planned steel-era communities.
