The 128th Boston Marathon is announced on a large digital display, with participants of the "Midnight Marathon" bike ride gathered below. This unsanctioned event, now in its 16th year, takes place annually on the night before the official Boston Marathon. Thousands of cyclists ride the marathon route through the city's streets under the cover of darkness. The bike ride has become a notable unofficial tradition preceding the historic marathon, which began in 1897.
