South Station's Red Line platform sits below the MBTA's largest transit hub, where subway, commuter rail, and intercity Amtrak service converge at Dewey Square. The Red Line here runs inbound toward Alewife in Cambridge, one end of a line that also branches south to Ashmont and Braintree. Overhead signage marks the adjacent Silver Line routes SL1, SL2, and SL3, bus rapid transit services that connect South Station to Logan International Airport and the Seaport District. South Station opened in its current form in 1899 and was rebuilt as a modern multimodal terminal in the 1980s after decades of decline.
