The 4 block area became a place of protest following the May 25th killing of George Floyd. The area has been transformed into a community memorial space filled with murals, protest art, flowers, barricades, and tributes honoring victims of police violence. The area remained occupied by protesters and closed to vehicular traffic for a year before barricades were removed on June 3, 2021. Following the removal of the barricades, cars began to flow through the area while daily community meetings continue to be held. The city purchased The People’s Way, the former Speedway gas station at 38th/Chicago in June 2023 with plans for a permanent memorial.

A raised fist sculpture and a rotating collection of memorial art remain fixtures at the site.

Pink flowers and buds along a curved magenta stem against blurred green foliage in Costa Rica.
Phytolacca, a genus in the pokeweed family, produces magenta-stemmed flower spikes like this one, found in the understory of Central American cloud forests such as Monteverde's reserve. Its small white-and-pink blossoms mature into dark berries that birds and small mammals feed on and disperse, helping the plant colonize disturbed ground and forest edges.

Straight highway with yellow center line crossing flat agricultural fields in North Dakota.
Highway 17 runs north-south through Ramsey County in northeastern North Dakota, passing near the small community of Starkweather. The route cuts through land farmed primarily for wheat, canola, and soybeans, part of the broader Drift Prairie region shaped by glacial deposits. Canola became a significant rotation crop in North Dakota starting in the 1990s, and the state now leads the nation in canola production. Rural highways like this one remain the primary link for area farms to grain elevators and regional markets.

North Dakota leads the nation in canola production, growing roughly 90 percent of the U.S. crop, much of it across the Devils Lake and Langdon Plain regions near Starkweather. Canola planted here in May typically reaches full bloom by early July, the stage captured in fields like this one. The crop is crushed for vegetable oil and animal meal, with canola processing plants in Velva and other North Dakota towns anchoring the state's supply chain. Wheat remains the state's other dominant crop, and spring wheat varieties planted alongside canola are usually still green and unheaded at the same point in the growing season.
