Nippori Station sits in Tokyo's Arakawa and Taito wards, where the Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku, and Joban lines share track with the Keisei Main Line toward Narita Airport. JR East and Keisei Electric Railway both operate platforms here, making it one of the few stations in the city where a limousine-style airport train and a local loop line depart from adjacent tracks. The station opened in 1905 as a stop on the Yamanote Line's predecessor route and later expanded as Keisei added its own terminal nearby in the 1930s. Overhead gantries carry the signal and catenary wiring that keep the multiple lines separated as they fan out from the platforms toward the rail yards to the north.
