Yodobashi Camera Storefront, Nishi-Shinjuku, Tokyo

Yodobashi Camera got its start in 1960 as a small camera shop near Yodobashi in western Shinjuku, and its name stuck even after the company expanded into computers, appliances, and general electronics. The Nishi-Shinjuku flagship area now spans several specialized buildings clustered along the streets west of Shinjuku Station, each devoted to a different category of goods, from cameras and PCs to watches and golf equipment. Yodobashi Holdings operates dozens of stores nationwide, but the Shinjuku location remains its founding home base and one of its largest retail footprints. The company competes directly with Bic Camera as one of Japan's two dominant electronics retail chains, both of which built their businesses around duty-free sales to tourists in addition to domestic shoppers.
