George Air Force Base operated in Victorville, California, from 1941 until it closed in 1992 under a federal base realignment order. During the Cold War it served as home to fighter squadrons flying F-4 Phantoms and later F-4G Wild Weasels, training crews for electronic warfare and air combat missions. Officer housing on base sheltered military families for decades before the closure left the neighborhood empty. Part of the former base has since been redeveloped as Southern California Logistics Airport, but sections of the old residential streets remain abandoned.
