Angled Rooflines of the Community Center at George Air Force Base
Taken December 2011
George Air Force Base trained fighter and bomber crews from 1941 until Congress ordered its closure under the 1988 Base Realignment and Closure Act, with final withdrawal in 1992. During the Cold War, the base hosted Tactical Air Command units alongside its training mission. Structures like this one served the base's recreational and community functions, built to support thousands of stationed personnel and their families. Much of the property now falls within the Southern California Logistics Airport, a joint civilian-military reuse of the former base, while other sections remain undeveloped and abandoned.
