The former Kmart at Lake Street and Nicollet Avenue closed in 2020 after decades of operation, and its parking lot was pressed into service as a staging ground for USPS delivery vans. The move came after the nearby Lake Street postal station was damaged during the unrest following George Floyd's death in May 2020, forcing carriers to work out of temporary sites while repairs were made. Rows of USPS vans parked here each morning for loading before drivers headed out on their routes. The high-rise towers visible behind the lot are part of the Whittier neighborhood's residential corridor along Nicollet Avenue.
