Roller tables like these move red-hot steel slabs and bars through the mill between processing stages, using motor-driven rollers set into the floor. The No. 4 Safety Island visible nearby marks a designated refuge point where workers can step clear of moving equipment and overhead crane traffic. ArcelorMittal's East Chicago facility, known as Indiana Harbor Works, sits along Lake Michigan and traces its roots to Inland Steel, which began operations at the site in 1902. The mill's scale required extensive overhead crane systems and catwalks, visible in the structural framework spanning the production floor.
