The No. 4 Safety Island sits inside ArcelorMittal's Indiana Harbor works in East Chicago, Indiana, one of the largest integrated steel-making complexes in North America. Safety islands like this one mark fixed refuge points within a mill's production bays, giving workers a designated space clear of overhead cranes, moving rail cars, and hot steel stock. Emergency stations such as this are equipped with alarm pulls, first-aid supplies, and fire equipment required under mill safety protocols. The surrounding rail lines and steel beams are part of the plant's rolling operations, where semi-finished steel is moved and shaped along fixed tracks within the mill building.
