ArcelorMittal's Indiana Harbor Works in East Chicago, Indiana, traces its roots to Inland Steel, which opened the plant in 1901 along Lake Michigan's southern shore. Ispat International bought the mill in 1998, followed by Mittal Steel in 2005 and the ArcelorMittal merger in 2006. The complex is one of the largest integrated steel mills in North America, with a raw steelmaking capacity of roughly 6 million tons a year. It remains one of the largest employers in East Chicago, with a workforce numbering in the thousands.
