"Democracy Defender" vests mark volunteers from Nonviolent Peaceforce, a global nonprofit that trains civilians in unarmed protection work at protests and conflict zones. The group deployed monitors at marches across Minneapolis following the 2020 presidential election, positioning themselves between demonstrators and police to de-escalate potential confrontations. A "Green New Deal" sign carried nearby points to the range of causes represented in the crowd that day. The Third Precinct station had already become a of unrest in Minneapolis months earlier, drawing continued demonstrations through the fall.
