A freight crew member walks near a train during a snowstorm in Green Bay, Wisconsin. — A freight crew member walks alongside HLCX 1070 during a heavy snowstorm at Quincy Street and Eastman Avenue in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The locomotive’s headlights cut through the blowing snow as operations continue despite low visibility and freezing conditions. Industrial structures in the background fade into the whiteout, highlighting how rail work persists year-round across the region’s manufacturing and transportation corridors.

Freight trains and University Southeast Steam Plant — Freight cars sit on rail tracks near the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, with the University of Minnesota campus in the background. The Southeast Steam Plant and its red exhaust stacks rise behind the trains, and the Washington Avenue Bridge crosses the river farther upstream. The scene highlights the mix of industry, infrastructure, and campus development along the riverfront.

Freight train with graffiti parked beside Old Main Heating Plant in Minneapolis during winter. — These hopper cars sit on tracks running past the University of Minnesota's Old Main Heating Plant, which has long supplied steam heat to the East Bank campus through a network of underground tunnels. Across the Mississippi River, the Gold Medal Flour sign marks the site of the former Washburn-Crosby mill complex, once among the largest flour-milling operations in the world and the namesake of General Mills. The rail corridor along this stretch of river served Minneapolis's milling district for more than a century, moving grain in and flour out to markets across the country.

General Mills Grain Elevator and Rail Yard in Northeast Minneapolis, a key industrial facility for grain storage and transportation connecting to national markets. — The General Mills Grain Elevator and Rail Yard in Northeast Minneapolis is a critical component of the region's agricultural and industrial infrastructure. This facility, designed for the storage and transportation of grain, plays a vital role in the food processing industry, particularly for a company with deep roots in Minneapolis's milling history. The extensive rail yard adjacent to the elevators facilitates the efficient movement of commodities, connecting local production to national and international markets. Its presence underscores the historical importance of grain processing and transportation to the economic development of Minneapolis.

Multiple freight trains lined up in parallel tracks at Northtown Yard rail facility in North Minneapolis. — Northtown Yard, a major rail freight hub in North Minneapolis, is seen here with numerous freight cars.

Railroad tracks lead to a General Mills grain elevator and freight train at night in Minneapolis. — A General Mills grain elevator complex sits along active rail lines in Minneapolis. General Mills, headquartered in Golden Valley, Minnesota, operates grain milling and food production facilities across the Minneapolis area. Rail spurs connect the elevator to the wider freight network, including Canadian National and other North American carriers, for shipping grain and finished products.

The train cars, a mix of covered hoppers and tank cars, are part of the extensive rail network that has historically served as a vital artery for commerce and industry in the Twin Cities region. Rail transport remains a significant component of the local and national economy, facilitating the movement of goods and materials.

Freight rail corridor near Westminster Junction, St. Paul, a vital transportation hub for the Upper Midwest, with a bridge in the distance leading to downtown. — This freight rail corridor near Westminster Junction in St. Paul highlights the city's historical importance as a transportation hub for the Upper Midwest. The junction, which has facilitated connections for multiple rail carriers over decades, remains a vital artery for freight and passenger traffic. The image shows a single track alongside a wider right-of-way, indicative of the heavy rail usage for hauling commodities like grain and intermodal freight. The presence of dense vegetation along the tracks suggests how these corridors can also serve as green spaces within the urban environment. In the distance, a bridge marks the approach to downtown St. Paul, a city historically central to river, road, and rail transport management.

Weathered railroad safety sign warning "Do not ride top of car beyond this point" at Omaha rail yard. — The sign's warning — "Do Not Ride Top of Car Beyond This Point" — marks a boundary once used to keep brakemen and yard workers from climbing onto moving rail cars, a common but dangerous practice before modern safety rules restricted it. Rail yards like this one relied on such hand-lettered signage to communicate hazards long before standardized safety placards became common. The rusted mounting and weathered lettering suggest the sign has stood in place for decades, outlasting much of the rail activity it once regulated.
