The Superior National Forest covers more than three million acres across northeastern Minnesota, stretching along the Canadian border from near International Falls to Grand Portage. Congress established it in 1909, and the U.S. Forest Service now manages it as one of the most water-rich forests in the country, with roughly 2,000 lakes and hundreds of miles of streams and wetlands like the one pictured here. More than a million acres of the forest fall within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the most-visited wilderness area in the United States. The forest's mix of birch, aspen, and conifer stands produces some of the region's most reliable fall color displays each October.

Midtown Greenway bike trail in Minneapolis with fresh asphalt, yellow center lines, and fall foliage overhead.
The Midtown Greenway occupies a former Milwaukee Road rail corridor that runs roughly five and a half miles through south Minneapolis, connecting the Mississippi River to the Chain of Lakes. The trench-level trail was converted for cycling and pedestrian use beginning in the 1990s, with the paved bikeway completed in phases through the early 2000s. Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board crews periodically repave and restripe the corridor to manage wear from year-round commuter and recreational traffic. The route is maintained as a car-free path, separated from cross traffic by bridges and underpasses at most major streets.

Dippy's Ice Cream Shop sits within Founder's Square, a cluster of shops along Highway 42 in Fish Creek, Wisconsin, set against the limestone bluffs that rise along this stretch of the Door County shoreline. Fish Creek was platted in the 1850s and grew as a lumber and shipping port before becoming one of the peninsula's early tourist villages. Founder's Square takes its name from the site's association with the town's original settlers and now houses a mix of seasonal businesses catering to visitors. Each October, shop owners in the square put out Halloween displays alongside pumpkins and mums to mark the transition into the fall tourist season.
