This "Keep Back 500 Ft. Turbulent Water" sign warns boaters of the current below St. Anthony Falls, the only natural waterfall on the Mississippi River. The falls drop about 50 feet and once powered the flour and lumber mills that built Minneapolis into a milling capital in the late 1800s. The Stone Arch Bridge, visible upstream, was built in 1883 by railroad magnate James J. Hill to carry trains across the river just below the falls.
