Grand Central Terminal opened in 1913 on 42nd Street, designed by the firms Reed & Stem and Warren & Wetmore. The Beaux-Arts building serves Metro-North Railroad commuter lines and sits above 48 tracks on two underground levels. Vanderbilt Avenue runs along the terminal's western side, named for the family whose New York Central Railroad built the original depot on the site in 1871. The terminal underwent a major restoration in the 1990s, and its exterior has periodically required scaffolding for ongoing stone and facade maintenance. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976 after a Supreme Court case preserved it from demolition.
