Hallway View Through a Gutted Unit at George Air Force Base

George Air Force Base closed in 1992 following the 1988 Base Realignment and Closure Commission decision, ending more than five decades of Air Force operations near Victorville, California. Its family housing units were left standing afterward, unmonitored for years as redevelopment plans for the site repeatedly stalled. Copper theft, vandalism, and weather exposure gradually gutted many of the structures, collapsing ceilings and shattering windows throughout. Some portions of the former base later became Southern California Logistics Airport, but the residential blocks were largely left to deteriorate on their own.
