Cantilevered Roof, Minneapolis Central Library

The Minneapolis Central Library sits at 300 Nicollet Mall, designed by Cesar Pelli and opened in 2006 as the fourth building to house the city's central library collection. The building spans about 353,000 square feet across four levels and cost roughly $150 million to construct. Its roof is a signature element of Pelli's design, a cantilevered canopy clad in wood paneling that extends beyond the glass curtain wall below. The library holds the Hennepin County Library system's central collection and includes a rooftop garden, an art gallery, and a special collections department documenting local history.
