Canadian Wildfire Smoke Over Lake of the Isles, Minneapolis
Aerial view of a residential neighborhood with a river running through tree-covered terrain under hazy conditions.
Lake of the Isles anchors the western edge of Minneapolis's Chain of Lakes, a park system linked by channels to Cedar Lake and Bde Maka Ska. Landscape architect Horace Cleveland helped shape the surrounding parkway system in the late 19th century, and the lake's shoreline is part of the Chain of Lakes Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In June 2023, smoke drifting south from Canadian wildfires pushed air quality across the Twin Cities to hazardous levels for several days, casting a haze over the lakes and surrounding neighborhoods.
