ArcelorMittal's East Chicago Works sits along the Indiana Harbor Ship Canal on Lake Michigan, part of the Indiana Harbor complex formed from the former Inland Steel and LTV Steel operations. The elevated steel walkway and grated catwalks seen here run parallel to the mill's rolling line, allowing workers to move safely above the production equipment while staying clear of hot steel and moving machinery. Overhead crane rails and support columns line both sides of the bay, carrying the traveling cranes used to move coils and rolled sections through the mill. The facility remains one of the largest integrated steel plants in North America, producing flat-rolled steel for the automotive, appliance, and construction industries.
