The Midtown Greenway in South Minneapolis is a multi-use trail built on a former railroad corridor. The "Winston Smith" graffiti visible on the retaining wall refers to Winston Smith, a protester who was killed by federal law enforcement officers a block away from this location in June 2021. This incident occurred during the period of unrest following the murder of George Floyd, and Smith's death became a focal point for ongoing activism and community grief in Minneapolis. The trail itself is a vital piece of urban infrastructure, providing a safe and accessible route for cyclists and pedestrians through the city.
