Wild Mushroom Cluster on Log, Superior National Forest

Superior National Forest covers more than three million acres across northeastern Minnesota, bordering Canada along the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Fallen logs and decaying wood throughout the forest support clusters of gilled mushrooms, which break down cellulose and lignin as part of the forest's natural decomposition cycle. These fungi typically appear in fall, often growing in dense groups on moss-covered deadwood.
