The Viterra grain elevator in Minneapolis is part of a concrete silo complex built for bulk grain storage, a design that became standard across the Upper Midwest in the early twentieth century after wooden elevators proved prone to fire and rot. Viterra, an international grain handling and marketing company, operates elevators like this one to store wheat, corn, and soybeans before rail shipment to processing and export markets. A rail siding runs alongside the complex, allowing hopper cars to be loaded directly from the storage silos for transport.
