Transit infrastructure and urban life across central and western Tokyo districts
March 2, 2023 - March 11, 2023 — Tokyo, Japan
This photo series documents the infrastructure and urban environments that define Tokyo’s function as one of the world’s largest metropolitan regions. Key locations include historic rail stations such as Shimbashi—originating as Japan's first railway terminal in 1872—and contemporary commuter hubs like Nippori, which serve as strategic junctions connecting city districts and outlying areas by means of the Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku, Keisei, and Joban rail lines. The coverage extends to the extensive subway network, including major routes like the Marunouchi Line, which has operated since 1954 and continues to play a vital role in daily city transit.
Beyond transport, the series highlights commercial and cultural spaces including the Tokyo International Exhibition Center (Tokyo Big Sight), a major venue for international events and conventions in Odaiba, as well as the illuminated retail landscapes of Shinjuku’s technology stores, entertainment venues, and restaurant districts. Each structure, from postwar station facades to postmodern exhibition architecture, reflects a period of rapid urban development and the enduring importance of accessible infrastructure supporting commerce, cultural activity, and daily life in Tokyo.
