Shimbashi Station Signage, Tokyo

Shimbashi Station opened in 1872 as the terminus of Japan's first railway line, connecting Tokyo to Yokohama. The original station building stood near the current site until it was rebuilt following the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and further changes after World War II. Today's Shimbashi Station serves as a major interchange for JR East's Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku, and Tokaido lines, along with the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line and the Yurikamome automated transit line to Odaiba. The station sits in Tokyo's Minato ward, an area long associated with business offices and, in recent decades, izakaya-lined streets popular with salarymen after work hours.
